For years, it was said that the Endley Farm owned by the two brothers Joe and Bob
Cox was haunted. Though they employed a few farmhands, no farm labourer was
willing to work there long for they were always astonished to find that all the work had
already been completed on the following day. Furthermore, a figure had been seen
cutting corn in the moonlight. In time, it became well-known that a ghost served the Cox brothers faithfully. No one expressed doubt or surprise about the ghost until the
villagers went to the funeral of Endley. The villagers realized to their amusement that
the ghost was none other Eric Cox, a third brother who was supposed to have died as a young man. After the funeral, Job and Bob informed the villagers of the secret which
they had kept for over fifty years. Eric had been obliged to join the army during the
Second World War. As he hated army life, he escaped from his regiment and hid
himself in the farm until the end of war. Fearing the authorities, Eric remainded in hiding after the war as well. For years, Eric's secret had been concealed from all the villagers except for his father and two brothers. During that time, Eric had lived as a recluse,
sleeping during the day and working at night. Of course, he had no idea that he had
become the ghost of Endley. Afer his death, however, his brother found it impossible to keep the secret any longer.
