上接 EN Note # A Study in Scarlet, Chapter 1-7
Chapter 8
The narrow passage led us into a countryard covered with flagstones (石板)and lined by sordid(破爛的) houses.
We picked our way among groups of dirty children, and through washing-lines of stained(沾有污漬的) clothes, until we came to Number 46, whose door had a small slip of brass(黃銅) on which the name Rance was written.
The officer appeared, looking a little irriatable(煩躁的) at being disturbed in his sleep.
Rance answered with his eyes upon the little gold coin.
Rance sprang to his feet with a frightened face and suspicion in his eyes.
He couldn't stand, far less help us.
We started off for the cab together, leaving the office confused.
There's the scarlet thread of murder running through the colorless skein(糾葛) of life, and our duty is to unravel(解開) it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it. 該篇名稱的由來
Chapter 9
It gives a fairly good account of the affair.
"In Brixton Road, this morning," it ran, "a plain gold wedding ring, found in the roadway between the 'White Hart' Tavern and Holland Grove. Apply Dr. Watson, 221B, Balcer Street, between eight and nine this evening."
It was the first announcement in the "Found" column. [ which Holmes used to bait the criminal suspect ]
If my view of the case is correct, this man would rather risk anthing than(不惜一切代價而不愿) lose the ring.
Put your pistol(手槍) in your pocket.
The steps were uncertain and shuffing(搖曳不定而又拖沓的). A look of surprise passed over(露出) the face of my companion as he listened to it.
I glanced at my companion, and his face had such an unhappy expression that it was all I could do to keep my self from laugh.
Chapter 10
The hall door had hardly closed behind our vistor before(剛一……就) Holmes walked down the stair.
I have mocked them so much that they would never have let me hear the end of it(耳根就別想清凈了).
I saw the cab pull up(停下來).
It's heads I win and tails you lose.(正面我贏,反面你輸)
The mere sight of(只要看到) an official-looking person closes men's lips(讓人閉嘴) .
Sherlock Holmes gave a sign of relief(松了口氣), and relaxed into a smile.
The idea excited Gregson so much that he laughed until he started coughing.
“Arthur Charpentier, sub-lieutenant(海軍中尉) in Her Majesty's(英女皇) navy”, cried Gregson, rubbing his fat hands and puffing out his chest(挺起胸膛).
Chapter 11
That didn't escape my notice. I sensed(意識到) that someting was wrong.
The mother nodded. She didn't seem to able to get out a word.
No good can ever come of lies.(說謊是沒有好處的)
He is utterly(完全地) innocent of it.
If your son is innocent, he would be none the worse(毫發無損,依然如故).
When I closed the door behind him, a loud(重擔) seemed to be lifted(放下) from my mind.
Poor Alia was so frightened that she ran away from him, but he caught her by the wrist and tried to pull her towards the door.
Chapter 12
Drebber was then hit by the stick, in the area of the stomach, which killed him without leaving any mark.
The cause of death was a deep stab in the left side, which must have wounded the heart.
I flatter myself that I have managed it rather cleverly.
However, the assurance(胸有成竹) and cheerfulness(元氣滿滿) / which generally marked his conduct(舉止) and the clothes(衣著) he wore / were gone.
The plot thickens.(習語,事情突然變得更加復雜神秘了)
It wad thick(復雜的) enough before.
On my question as to whether a Mr. Stangersin was living there, they at once fave me a positive answer.
From murder the door there was a little red line of blood, which had flowed across the passage and formed a little pool along the skirting(邊緣,附近) at the other side.
Chapter 13
Could you lay your hand upon(找到,得到) those pills?
“From their lightness(重量) and transparency(透明度), I should imagine that they are soluble(可溶的) in water,” I remarked.
"Precisly so," answered Holmes.
You see that Dr.Watson is right and that it readily(輕易地)dissolves(溶解).
He bit his lip, tapped his fingers upon the table, and showed every other sign of impatience."I will now cut one of these pills in two", said Holmes, and drawing a knife he suited the action the word(說到做到).
Chapter 14
It is impossible that it should be a mere chance(偶然事件,意外=fortunity).
Sherlock Holmes drew a long breath(深吸一口氣), and wiped the sweat from his forehead.
I ought to know by this time that when a fact goes against what I know, there must be some other explanation.
If I fail I will, of course, take all the blame(承擔全部責任) due to my mistake.
I still remember that instant —— Holmes' triumphant(得意洋洋的) expression, and the cab man's dazed(茫然的), savage face and he glared at the glittering(閃閃發光的) handcuffs, which had appeared as if bu magic upon his wrists.
I have good hopes of managing(做…有信心) it through my own arrangements.
(to be continued……)
