繼上次翻譯之后,今天的翻譯內(nèi)容是新概念Ⅲ第二十四課。老規(guī)矩:本文打算先列出我的譯文,然后給出書中譯文,然后根據(jù)對(duì)比點(diǎn)明這次翻譯的收獲和教訓(xùn),最后再列出英文原文,以方便有志之人自己翻譯學(xué)習(xí)。
我的譯文:
我們經(jīng)常在小說讀到這樣的情節(jié):一個(gè)表面上值得敬佩的人物或家庭,卻隱藏著一些可怕的秘密,數(shù)年來從未告知他人。英語中就有一種說法,生動(dòng)地描述了這種情況。這些可怕的秘密被稱作“柜中骷髏”。在故事的一些戲劇性時(shí)刻,這些秘密暴露,而原有的名聲也隨風(fēng)而逝。當(dāng)讀者在小說最后幾頁讀到,書中的女主人公,一個(gè)總是對(duì)每個(gè)人都特別好的優(yōu)雅老婦人,在青年時(shí)把自己的五個(gè)丈夫都一一毒死了,他們往往會(huì)毛骨悚然。
這種事發(fā)生在小說中當(dāng)然沒有任何問題。在不同程度上,我們都有著這樣的秘密,連最親密的朋友都不愿意告訴,但肯定沒有人在櫥柜藏了骷髏。我唯一知道的家中有骷髏的人,就是喬治?卡爾頓了,而且他還居然對(duì)此十分驕傲。喬治年輕時(shí)學(xué)過醫(yī),但他沒有從醫(yī),卻成為了一個(gè)出色的偵探小說家。我曾經(jīng)在他家過了一個(gè)特別不舒服的周末,簡直永生難忘。喬治把我?guī)нM(jìn)了一個(gè)沒怎么用過的客房,然后告訴我放下行李后下樓吃飯。我把襯衫、內(nèi)衣放在兩個(gè)空抽屜里之后,準(zhǔn)備把我?guī)淼膬商孜鞣胚M(jìn)衣柜里。打開柜門之后,我整個(gè)人都僵住了。在我眼前的是一副晃動(dòng)的骷髏骨架。柜門的打開讓它隨之輕輕搖擺,結(jié)果讓我覺得它好像要馬上要跳出柜門來咬我一樣。我趕緊扔下西服,沖下樓告訴喬治。這可比“可怕的秘密”還要恐怖,這可是一副真的骷髏啊!沒想到喬治卻感覺平淡無奇,“哦,它呀”他笑著說,仿佛在談?wù)撘晃焕吓笥眩澳鞘侨退沟侔病D阃宋铱稍?jīng)是學(xué)醫(yī)的啊。”

思考:
在此,我將兩譯文有較大差異之處列出,分析其出入原因,得到一些關(guān)于翻譯表達(dá)的反思。
差距1

1從第一句話看出,把定語從句拆成單句,放在后面單獨(dú)說明,文字節(jié)奏更好。
2“不禁會(huì)毛骨悚然”這后半句讓我感覺佩服。在主語相同的情況下,不妨考慮動(dòng)作的連續(xù)性,不必再重置主語。
差距2
我:我曾經(jīng)在他家過了一個(gè)特別不舒服的周末,簡直永生難忘。喬治把我?guī)нM(jìn)了一個(gè)沒怎么用過的客房,然后告訴我放下行李后下樓吃飯。
書:有一次,我在他家里度周末,過得很不愉快。這事我永遠(yuǎn)不會(huì)忘記。喬治把我領(lǐng)進(jìn)客房,說這間很少使用。他讓我打開行裝后下樓吃飯。
分析:
1從語言的連續(xù)性和可讀性角度,我覺得這一句我翻譯得更好。書中譯文的各句子聯(lián)系太松散了。
2我覺得沒必要再強(qiáng)調(diào)“說”這個(gè)動(dòng)詞了,對(duì)主要句意的影響不大。當(dāng)然,如果要求更嚴(yán)格寫,我覺得把這個(gè)定語放在“客房”前面更好。反思了一下之后,我覺得“放下行李”、“打開行裝”都不如“收拾一下行李”會(huì)更好。
差距3
我:打開柜門之后,我整個(gè)人都僵住了。在我眼前的是一副晃動(dòng)的骷髏骨架。柜門的打開讓它隨之輕輕搖擺,結(jié)果讓我覺得它好像要馬上要跳出柜門來咬我一樣。
書:我打開柜門,站在柜門前一下驚呆了。一具骷髏懸掛在眼前,由于柜門突然打開,它也隨之輕微搖晃起來,讓我覺得它好像馬上要跳出柜門朝我撲過來似的。
分析:
1“站在柜門前”就顯得很奇怪和多余。“一具骷髏”翻譯得好,用量詞來讓讀者準(zhǔn)確感知意思,否則“骷髏”在漢語中會(huì)對(duì)應(yīng)兩種意向,讓人感覺或者是頭骨或者是骨架。
結(jié)論:
1翻譯的確是一件非常耗時(shí)耗心的事情,因?yàn)閷?duì)于精準(zhǔn)度的要求很高。就好比要求工匠對(duì)于細(xì)節(jié)的完美雕刻。而譯者在完成一次翻譯的時(shí)候就在雕刻兩件關(guān)聯(lián)作品,難度更大。
2感覺翻譯也是“帶著鐐銬的舞蹈”,要在維持原意的情況下,進(jìn)行演繹。而且還要求“跳舞”跳得最優(yōu)美。

We often read in novels how a seemingly respectable person or family has some terrible secret which has been concealed from strangers for years. The English language possesses a vivid saying to describe this sort of situation. The terrible secret is called 'a skeleton in the cupboard'. At some dramatic moment in the story, the terrible secret becomes known and a reputation is ruined. The reader's hair stands on end when he reads in the final pages of the novel that the heroine a dear old lady who had always been so kind to everybody, had, in her youth, poisoned every one of her five husbands.
It is all very well for such things to occur in fiction. To varying degrees, we all have secrets which we do not want even our closest friends to learn, but few of us have skeletons in the cupboard. The only person I know who has a skeleton in the cupboard is George Carlton, and he is very pound of the fact. George studied medicine in his youth. Instead of becoming a doctor, however, he became a successful writer of detective stories. I once spend an uncomfortable weekend which I shall never forget at his house. George showed me to the guestroom which, he said, was rarely used. He told me to unpack my things and then come down to dinner. After I had stacked my shirts and underclothes in two empty drawers, I decided to hang one of the tow suits I had brought with me in the cupboard. I opened the cupboard door and then stood in front of two suits I had brought with me in the cupboard.
